Why do Dogs need Dog Coats?
Cold Climates:
We need to keep in mind that although a dog has a natural coat they may require extra protection from the elements. Most dogs don’t enjoy the rain and getting wet!!
If a (long-haired) dog gets its body wet and muddy in the rain, unless this is dried off correctly immediately after being out, it may remain in the fur/hair and cause skin irritations, knotting and become musty with odour.
Harmful UV Rays:
Whilst humans tend to wear lighter clothes in the heat, in particular a dog that has been shaved, clipped or suffers hair loss may benefit from additional protection that apparel may provide from harmful UV rays. Also dogs with minimal body hair ie: Whippet, Pinscher, Staffy, Chinese crested, etc.
After Grooming:
Dogs like us can catch a chill. Particularly after a grooming treatment: clip/shave/wash they need to be kept warm and feeling protected until they adjust to their new conditions.
After Surgery:
Dogs that have undergone medical treatments that results in the loss of fur will often require at least some temporary protection from the elements until their fur grows back and they heal.
Elderly and/or Convalescing Dogs:
As dogs age, they may become arthritic, and will require special attention and treatment. Also whilst convalescing from an operation or trauma, they find comfort in being kept warm and enjoy the feeling of closeness in their environment. Safety Issues:

A note from YAP WEAR:
As many people now have their Dogs living & sleeping indoors the Dog's body temperature will become acclimatised to artificial heating. Therefore many breeds are not growing the undercoat they would, as when they were living outdoors or in the wild like their ancestors the wolf.
This can result in Dogs feeling the cold more with the potential to catch chills. A preventative measure such as putting something warm on your Dog is more healthier for them than a visit to the vet and a course of medication.
Also Dogs that are left wet after a walk, can become smelly & knotted. This is unpleasant for your dog, you and furniture. Providing your Dog's with a coat will help to avoid this quite simply. Then a small towel near the front door can be used just to wipe down the paws and head.
Jenny Daicos, owner of YAP WEAR has 2 mini Schnauzers: Lili is 10yr and Milo is 15 yrs young. She was telling us that her Dogs are always in the office with them. On cold days they are used to heating in the office/home, but at night the heating is left off. Therefore Lili and Milo always sleep in a 'Skivvy' or a 'Homie-sweat' in their beds.
For a senior, Milo is still very active and runs like a canon ball at the park. Jenny is determined that her Dogs will not suffer early onset of arthritis, and this is why they are always kept warm when necessary.
